We put the evapotrons on top of trucks because up there they are exposed to sun and wind all the time. No shadows as the day gets longer. The smell and mist of grey water isn’t so nice in a crowded camp, but on top of the truck, no one notices. The truck’s roof also serves as a final catching point for overflow; splashing grey water evaporates from the top of the truck instead of getting on the playa. Finally, the location up a ladder discourages random people from dumping grey water into the system, which was a problem in 2011.
Wylbur!!!! Is the Evapotron scheduled to do it’s thing this year??
Chuck @ JOBI
hey Chuck, great to hear from you! I think that yes, the evapotrons are going to run again. We’re going to simplify the control units drastically so that the pump runs (through a rectifier) directly from the AC as long as it’s up, but then switches to battery only if the AC fails. Even that isn’t really necessary. We’ve been talking about whether we might also make the evaporation surface bigger, maybe 8′ tall instead of 4′, but we’re not sure how the structure will stay rigid over two sections of the wire mesh that holds it. Also we want a bigger reservoir because it was tedious to be constantly refilling it last year. And we need a different way to distribute the water onto the burlap, maybe a sprayer of some kind inside. The trickling-down from the saucer on top wasn’t very even last year. Hope you’re doing really well — wylbur.
